Do not measure a person.  

Compare to a currently fitting shirt: 

* Take a well fitting BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

* Use a tape measure

* Lay the shirt down flat, on the back side

* Measure from side to side, going across aprox 1/2" under the arm pit area.

ONE SIDE ONLY, NOT ALL THE WAY AROUND

* SMALL= Aprox size: 2/4 child or -(14" seam to seam, back only- under the armpits)
