With the election of the Republican candidate for President Abraham, Lincoln, the Southern states decided they had to take drastic action in order to protect their own interest. On December 20, 1860 a secession convention met in South Carolina and adopted an ordinance of session from the Union. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas quickly followed suit. Though efforts of secede failed in Missouri and Kentucky, born were recognized by the Confederacy and represented by 2 stars on the Confederate flag.
